There seems to be a few underhanded tactics going into this fight and it has to be treated with caution. Maxim Grishin is a huge fighter who drains himself down to make the Light Heavyweight weight limit. William Knight came into the weigh-in today a massive 13 pounds over the weight limit knowing that Grishin is the type of fighter who would take the fight anyway. This looks to give Knight a bit of an underhanded advantage in this fight as he has not drained himself down the way Grishin has. Fade.
Jeremiah Wells VS Mike Mathetha
Jerimiah Wells by Sub - Stake 1.5 Units, Minimum Odds 2.75, Best Book - Topsport
There is a lot of talk surrounding Blood Diamond around the casual UFC followers who I’m assuming are impressed by his nickname or being Adesanyas training partner. Blood Diamond does have plenty of kickboxing experience but only has 3 Pro MMA fights and this lack of experience is what’s going to be his undoing. Wells is not a top tier fighter in the division but he is a more than capable grappler coming out of a brilliant grappling gym. Wells will likely get this fight to the mat early where Diamond has shown 0 ability in the past. Wells will search for the back early, find the neck and apply pressure to this Diamond.
Douglas Silva de Andrade VS Sergey Morozov
Sergey Morozov by Decision - Stake 2 Units, Minimum Odds 2.1, Best Book - Topsport
We have 2 fighters here who are point fighters however they do it in different ways. Andrade is a stand and bang fighter who has slight chin issues and question marks over his will to fight when he faces adversity. Morozov is a wet blanket grappler who is more than capable in the stand-up game. Morozov is the all-around stronger fighter and most importantly here holds a stronger fight IQ. Both of these fighters have only lost to strong fighters however we see Morozov as a fighter who can make waves in the division while Andrade has likely peaked already. This will be a great 15-minute battle.
Carlos Ulberg VS Fabio Cherant
Carlos Ulberg by KO/TKO - Stake 2.5 Units, Minimum Odds 1.67, Best Book - Topsport
Carlos Ulberg looks like a solid Light Heavyweight prospect coming out of City Kickboxing and faces a chinny fighter in Fabio Cherant. Cherant has lost in the first round in both of his UFC fights and there’s a good chance the same thing happens today. Cherant is not UFC quality.
Jacob Malkoun VS AJ Dobson
Jacob Malkoun is Whittaker’s training partner and similar to Blood Diamond is only here because the UFC is doing Whittaker a favour. AJ Dobson looks to be the goods from what we have seen on the Contender and very well could get the job done in an emphatic fashion however this fight looks to be a little too close for us to pick a side. What we do like here is for the fight not to go the distance as both fighters have high finishing potential.
Ronnie Lawrence VS Mana Martinez
Ronnie Lawerence has the makings of a future top tier fighter. Lawerence easily dispatched Vince Cachero in his UFC debut and gets another fighter in Martinez who likely doesn’t deserve his contract in the competition. The only argument we have had over Lawerence is whether he will win by the decision as he is typically a points fighter or by KO as he is the much better fighter here. In the end, we have decided to keep Lawerence as a multi-piece to win straight up.
Alex Perez VS Matt Schnell
Both fighters struggled to get to the weight limit and it would have set up a great violence bet for us with 2 fighters that would stand and bang till someone drops. This fight has unfortunately been called off for the 5th time and it seems this fight is cursed to never take place.
Kyler Phillips VS Marcelo Rojo
Kyler Phillips by KO/TKO - Stake 1.5 Units, Minimum Odds 2.1, Best Book - Topsport
Kyler the Matrix Phillips looks to be a brilliant prospect for the UFC. Phillips was very unlucky in his last fight where he almost knocked out Paiva in the first round before gassing after leaving it all in the cage. Phillips did lose that fight but it should have been a draw. Marcelo Rojo is not a great fighter and was beaten easily by Jourdain in his UFC debut. The one area that goes against us here is Rojos poor grappling so the Phillips sub may be on the table. We still see Phillips getting the finish and we have decreased the staking just in case Phillips does snap off his 2nd career sub.
Roxanne Modafferi VS Casey O’Neill
This is going to be Roxanne Modafferi’s retirement fight and we have a rule about never betting on a fighter after they have announced their retirement. Casey O’Neill has shown some great things in her first few fights in the promotion, but we have also seen some wrinkles in her game that will offer an excellent fade opportunity at some point soon. We are not getting the odds we would need to take O’Neill here and she has shown a tendency to finish fights early. This however goes against Modafferi’s record of not being finished in a fight since 2013. Fade on this bout.
Andrei Arlovski VS Jared Vanderaa
Andrei Arlovski is the longest-tenured fighter in UFC history, making his debut back in 2000. The former champion is 3rd all-time with 36 UFC bouts and is still fighting strong at 43 years old. Although the power has fallen from Arlovskis punches his fight IQ is still strong as is his ability to still beat incompetent fighters. Jared Vanderaa is an incompetent fighter. Vanderaa got into the UFC by beating possibly the worst UFC heavyweight fighter of all time in Harry Hunsucker. Since Vanderaa has made his debut he has only 1 victory over Justin Tafa in Tafas worst UFC performance. Arlovski can show his experience here and outpoint the human punching bag in Jared Vanderaa.

Nasrat Haqparast VS Bobby Green
Bobby “King” Green is back in the octagon after winning his first fight by a finish since 2013. Green is the ultimate points fighter who at times can come across as a bit cocky with his demeanour in the cage. Green has a great gas tank and heats up as the fight goes on. Haqparast is also a points fighter who was completely destroyed by Dan Hooker in his last fight. This sets up to be a great fight with two guys that should be striking until the bitter end. I would have a slight lean to Bobby Green, but typically Green has been on the wrong end of some harsh calls in the past and Texas judging isn’t always the best. We’ll keep this one safe for our multis to go the distance at odds that are far too high.
Alexander Hernandez VS Renato Moicano
Renato Moicano is a veteran of the UFC who is still going strong at a meagre 32 years old. Moicano is a brilliant grappler and a submission expert who has lost to only the best fighters in the UFC. Moicano will need to watch himself in the first round where Hernandez has strong knockout power. Hernandez is a fighter who typically has gas tank issues the further the fight goes on and this will be his undoing in the later rounds of this fight. Moicano has a big advantage in the grappling and his last 3 wins have all come by rear-naked choke. When Moicano gets to Hernandez’s back this one will be finished quickly.

Jared Cannonier VS Derek Brunson
This is the toughest fight to pick on the whole card today and it has everything at stake. The winner of this fight will likely be getting the next title shot so both fighters will be giving it everything they have. The short of it is we are going to pass on this fight with basically any method of finish possible, except a Cannonier Sub. Sit back relax, grab a drink and get ready for 15 minutes of high-level MMA.
Derrick Lewis VS Tai Tuivasa
Yes we get it, Tai’s the Aussie, he’s up and comer, the shoey, it’s all well and good until you have to face Derick Lewis. Lewis is a different breed of a fighter than what Tai has faced in the past and Tais chin is yet to be tested. The toughest puncher that Tuivasa has faced so far is JDS, and he KOd Tuivasa in the 2nd round. Lewis will be fighting in his hometown of Houston where he has a 5-1 record and the crowd loves him. We cant see this fight lasting too long as both fighters have said they plan on standing and banging until 1 guy falls. Tai would likely have an advantage if he tries to kick the legs, move around and try to outpoint Lewis but we think this is highly unlikely to happen. Tuivasa was rocked by former NFL player Greg Hardy who had a chance to put Tuivasa out if it wasn’t for poor fight IQ. Lewis by KO. Tai does the Cuppy.

Israel Adesanya VS Robert Whittaker
We’ve seen this one before and let’s be honest we really can’t see Izzy losing here. The toughest question is does Izzy win by KO or by points and we think Whittaker is going to be reserved enough to get this to the cards. Izzy is just a different breed of fighter and his reach and height are incredible for the division. Whittakers best path to victory is to take the fight to the mat, but Adesanya has a brilliant takedown defence. Adesanya is one of those fighters who looks even better to judges because of the way he strikes and the length that he has. This is a terrific fight that will finish off a brilliant card.

This is a bet that we absolutely love with Malcolm Gordon being the key fade on this card. Gordon is terrible. Gordon is not a fighter that should have a roster spot in the UFC and was extremely lucky to scratch out a decision against an equally poor fighter in his last bout. Bondar will be making his UFC debut but has shown a very nice well-rounded game in his previous fights. Bondar is the better fighter in every area of this match and short of him leaving his neck or arm in a vulnerable position for an extended time, should have no issue finishing Malcolm X.
Jason Witt VS Phillip Rowe

Jason Witt is not a good fighter and similar to Malcolm Gordon in the first fight has a chin of glass. Phillip Rowe is the much bigger fighter and in the cage is hungrier to win. Witt will try to get this fight to the ground, however Rowe has strong enough grappling to keep Witt off him. Eventually Witt will gas after attempting too many takedowns and Rowe will put him away. With 3 KO losses this will likely be the last time we will have to watch Jason Witt in the UFC

This is a value play at odds that are out of line. Almeida is rightfully the favourite in this match, but a UFC debutant should never see a line this wide. Almeida has shown excellent grappling throughout his career, but he faces Marques who is likely the best grappler he has come across. Marques has gone 2-1 so far in the UFC, losing his only match in his last fight against Nzechekwu after completely controlling him for the first 2 rounds. We get to take a shot on Marques here with the odds showing him disrespect.
Alexis Davis VS Julia Stoliarenko

Alexis Davis is a UFC veteran who has been doing this for years. Davis has fought the best of the best including Ronda Rousey (loss) and Amanda Nunes (Win). Davis is coming to the end of her career and has had her last 7 matches go to decision. Stoliarenko has lost both of her fights in the UFC and will likely have her contract ripped up in front of her when she loses her 3rd in a row. Stoliarenko is just not UFC quality.

Julian Erosa is a difficult fighter to read as he swings from the hip and goes out with a kill or be killed attitude. Erosa is equally strong at finishing on the feet or the ground which makes the double chance at plus money an intriguing bet here. Steven Peterson came in 4 pounds overweight for this fight and looked like crap on the scales, which will likely affect his gas tank. Peterson is usually a decision fighter however Erosa is great at forcing a dog fight and this is where we expect to see Peterson’s cardio run low.

We have another value play at a price that is well over the odds. Brendan Allen is the 3rd fighter that has been booked to take on Sam Alvey in the last 2 weeks. Allen took this fight on Wednesday and quite literally rolled off the couch put down his milkshake and pizza slice took a couple of rounds in the gym and thinks he is ready to fight. Allen is a great fighter on his day but he has a bad habit of looking past fighters he expects to beat. Allen was brutally knocked out by Chris Curtis a couple of months ago in a fight Curtis took 2 weeks after his previous fight. Allen is spiralling and taking a short notice fight has disaster written all over it. Alvey however is no prizefighter and currently enjoys an 0-6-1 streak. Alvey knows his job is on the line here and he needs to put in the performance of his life to keep his job.
Nick Maximov VS Punahele Soriano

Soriano is a brutal knockout artist who is looking to finish his opponent early. If Soriano can get the early finish then his gas tank certainly comes into question. Nick Maximov is taking on his toughest opponent yet, however, he has an excellent pedigree coming from the Nick Diaz academy. Maximov is an excellent grappler, can take a punch and has terrific cardio. I expect Maximov to take this fight to the mat where he has a decided advantage. Soriano’s grappling is yet to be tested in the UFC and we could either see him repeatedly working back up and expanding his precious cardio or struggling to regain position and being forced to tap. This is a fight where I would not be surprised if Soriano wins the first round then either loses on the ground or in the hands of the judges.
Jack Hermansson VS Sean Strickland

We have one of our favourite fighters in the UFC here in Sean Strickland, who as well as being an excellent fighter has zero filter on what he says to anyone. I encourage you all to watch his press conference for this fight if you want a laugh or 3. Strickland is a top-level points fighter who punches hard and has a high fight IQ. Think of a middleweight Tyson Fury. Strickland has knockout power but Hermansson has a very tough chin and I expect him to be able to withstand the barrage of strikes from Strickland. Hermansson is a high-level grappler who is more than proficient on the feet. Hermansson will likely repeatedly try to get this fight to the mat, however, Strickland has very high-level takedown defence and when on the mat is no fish out of water. Strickland has trained with some of the best grapplers in the world including current UFC phenom Khazmat Chimaev who recently destroyed Hermansson in a grappling match. We look forward to Strickland getting the job done here and can’t wait to hear what he has to say in the post-fight interview.

Pereira has shown vulnerabilities in the 3rd round before but he should have done enough by then to get his hand raised.

We get a massive 3rd fight for the Flyweight title between these 2 big rivals. Moreno got his hand raised last time with Figueiredo looking terrible from the scales to the end of the fight. This time Figueiredo looks in incredible form and has been working on his grappling with one of the best in the business. This looks to be a true 50-50 fight but we do believe it will be a 5 round thriller. To save us from a bad scorecard we have taken our most likely outcome for this fight.

Ciryl Gane has shown some incredible skills over the last year and has had a meteoric rise. Gane deserves this title shot and will redefine the weight class when he does become champion. N’Gannou has been out of the octagon for almost a full year and has been doing anything but training during this time. N’Gannou has been filming Fast and the Furious, Jackass, staring in multiple commercials, arguing with the UFC over fighter pay, travelling around the world, and trying to get a fight with Tyson Fury. Now all this being said N’Gannou does have a punchers chance but Gane’s head is in the right place for this fight.

Court McGee is a veteran of the UFC who has fought some of the best fighters around. McGee’s best attribute is his defence and incredible fight IQ. McGee doesn’t finish anyone with 15 of his last 16 fights getting to the judges scorecards. Brahimaj is an explosive grappler who tries to finish fights in the first round by chaining together submission attempts. When this doesn’t work, it’s likely he will be gassed and Court will grind him out for the remainder of the fight. Court McGee has never been finished by submission in his career.
Jamie Pickett VS Joseph Holmes

Jamie Pickett is a very athletic fighter who is coming into this fight in brilliant shape. Joseph Holmes is coming off the contender series where he really didn’t show us enough to prove he will cut it in the UFC. Contender series fighters are usually a brilliant bet to fade in their first UFC fight as it’s generally a huge step up in competition for them like it will be for Holmes.

We have a rematch here that to be honest never really needed to be made. In the first fight Chookagian won by decision and neither fighter has improved dramatically in the interim. In fact I believe Maia has regressed slightly. Chookagian is the type of fighter who will never finish anyone, she will use her kicks to keep the fight at range and use a loud “kee-ah” on every strike whether it’s landed or not which makes the judges think she’s doing better than she really is. Chookagian has only lost to the very best in the division.
Brandon Royval VS Rogerio Bontorin

This is going to be a brilliant match-up of two great flyweights. Brandon Royval is coming off back to back losses against the very best in the flyweight division, while Bontorin is still trying to build his way up the rankings. Royval fights with an incredible pace which in itself is used as a weapon. Royval has elite level grappling and when the fight gets to the mat, he will chain together submission attempts wearing his opponent down. Bontorin is short and stocky and also a high-level grappler but he is not on Royvals level. Bontorin likes to slowly build into the fight and prefers being on the front foot controlling the pace. Royval will not let Bontorin come forward on him and he will force the action until Bontorin makes a mistake. I expect Royval to finish this one quickly and it wo’nt take long for him to find a submission once we get to the mat.
Chase Sherman VS Jake Collier

This is a low-level heavy-weight bout where it is likely the loser leaves the UFC for good. Collier is a big man, pushing the very boundaries of the 265 pound weight limit, however, he is very athletic compared to his size. Collier doesn’t have heavy hands is not a known finisher, preferring to earn points to win and grapple if necessary. Sherman is a former bare-knuckle fighting champion who did his best work years ago when he was on the juice. Now with a clean drug test, Sherman is struggling to get a win, losing his last 2 fights in the UFC against poor opposition. I question Sherman’s work ethic and want to be in the UFC with him constantly asking his cornerman in the last fight if he was winning each round and a bored look on his face.
Calvin Katter VS Giga Chikadze

Giga Chikadze is a former kickboxing champion who has worked his way into the title picture after an impressive knock-out of Edson Barboza last time out. Chikadze has lethal kicks and the infamous “Giga Kick” which has finished many people in the past. Chikadze will come out fast and I expect him to win the first 3 rounds comfortably, however, Kattar is potentially the hardest fighter to finish in the UFC. Katter is an excellent boxer who has mixed it with some of the greatest fighters of all time. Kattar was given a career-defining beating by Max Holloway in his last fight, where he absorbed the most significant strikes in the history of the UFC and still pushed himself to the end of the fight. Kattar has shown in the past that he struggles to check kicks and an improvement in this area will be essential against one of the best kickers on the UFC roster. This bout essentially comes down to a great boxer vs a great kickboxer and 4 weapons are always better than 2.

This is a multi I love for tonight, combining some of my favourite fights on the card.
Ramazan Emeev by Points - Emeev is a terrific fighter who, at age 34, is reaching his go point to break into the UFC rankings. Emeev has a solid all-around game and excels when controlling his opponents on the mat. In 6 UFC fights, Emeev boasts a 5-1 record, with all six fights finishing by decision. Emeevs opponent Danny Roberts is also 34 but has reached the peak of his potential in the UFC. Roberts has been out of the ring for almost two years, which I always see as a worrying sign in an older fighter. Roberts should be able to hold his own on his feet with Emeev but will be outclassed on the mat, where Emeev will work over both Roberts and the judges.
Bruno Silva by KO/TKO - Silva was terrific in his UFC debut, defeating Wellington Turman in the first round. This is just a snippet of Silvas UFC potential with his extreme power and good fight IQ. Silva is on a five-fight win streak with 5 KO's and four in the first round. Silva's opponent Andrew Sanchez has been around the UFC for a few years but has never shown anything special. Sanchez has a 4-4 record in the UFC, with 3 of his losses coming by KO. We have seen the best of Sanchez's ability, but Silvas best looks yet to come.
Jim Miller by Sub - Jim Miller is a UFC veteran who has gone toe to toe with some of the greats, and there's a reason he's still around. Over the last few years, age has caught up to Miller, and he has struggled against the upper echelon of the division, but he has still held his own against lesser competition. Miller is on a 4-4 run where his losses have come against solid up and comers and the current division champion. Miller 4 wins during this time have all come via submission, where he is at his best on the mat. Miller's opponent, Erick Gonzalez, will be making his UFC debut which always brings nerves and an erratic game plan. In Gonzalez's five losses, he has been subbed twice and has shown a clear disadvantage when on the mat. Miller will play this fight to his strengths and get this fight to the mat early and often. The Wiley veteran will be too good for the rookie here.
