Rabbitohs @ Storm

Thursday 11th March 2021

Game Breakdown

Both teams look strong and ready to compete for the top 4 spots this season from their trials. The Bunnies typically score well in week one, while the Storm generally needs a bit of a push start to get going.

Last season the Storm conceded most of their points down the right-hand side of the field, while the Bunnies scored a lot down the left, so look towards Alex Johnston to come out of the blocks strong. Johnston has scored in 3 of the last four games he has played vs the Storm, although some were at fullback.

Ryan Papenhuyzen was the MVP in this series last year, scoring in both matches and averaging 200 run meters over the two contests.

Campbell Graham has scored four tries in his last three games vs the Storm, including a hat-trick in 2019. In the game that Graham didn’t score last year, he was the best metre gainer.

The Rabbitohs concede many tries to Storm Centres, particularly five straight games conceding to the left centre. Justin Olam playing in this spot, has scored against the Bunnies in his last three games straight.

SGM; Justin Olam, Ryan Papenhuyzen, Campbell Graham.

Bulldogs @ Knights

Friday 12 March 2021

Game Breakdown

The Knights are going to be a completely different team to start the season with no Kayln Ponga. You might say the same for the Bulldogs, who have new head coach Trent Barrett at the helm.

The Knights typically score down the left-hand side of the field, as do the Bulldogs.

The Knights have a great draw to start the season, but I'm not reading too much into this until they get their premier playmaker back.

This game is typically low scoring, and historically both of these teams start their seasons slow and low scoring games.

The Bulldogs have a much-improved attack and an attack-minded coach, so this looks like a team that can have a decent start to the season even with their tough draw.

Best bet; Total points Under 39.5

Eels @ Broncos

Friday 12th March 2021

Game Breakdown

The Eels struggled defensively on the right-hand side of the field last season, and this will be an area they must improve to increase their fortunes this season. The switch around of players from right to left will help this.

The Eels looked tired in their trial game and looked to be lacking early season fitness, and they started with a low scoring week one game last season.

The Broncos right-hand attack last season was more substantial than any other part of their game and will be looking to keep this side strong this season as well, and this may change, however, with the side mix up.

Maika Sivo has scored in the last five straight games vs the Broncos and looks to have their number.

Clint Gutherson had three tries in the two games vs the Broncos last season and averaged over 226 run meters in those contests to boot.

SGM; Maika Sivo, Clint Gutherson, Xavier Coates.

Titans @ Warriors

Saturday 13th March

Game Breakdown

A new era is beginning for both sides, with a heap of personal changes across the board. The last season of RTS should be enjoyable, with the Kiwi international wanting to go out with a bang.

RTS has scored in 4 of his last five matches vs the Titans, a stat he shares with Titans mainstay Anthony Don who has crossed in 4 of his last five games vs the Warriors.

Both the Warriors and Titans prefer to shift the ball to the left and score down that flank.

Both of these teams generally like to score many points out of the gate, and we can expect a high scoring week one contest.
Beware of Euan Aitken in the centres, he is a great player, but you're not going to see too much ball if you're playing outside him.

SGM; Anthony Don, RTS, Chris Thompson

Sea Eagles @ Roosters

Saturday 13th March

Game Breakdown

The absence of playmaking fullback Tom Trbojevic heightens an already tough first matchup for Manly.

Manly conceded many points last season but not against the Roosters as they ground out a 9-8 victory in week 2.

Manly was poor against teams attacking through the middle last season and have not improved their middle defence. During the previous four matches between these teams, the Sea Eagles have conceded five tries to middle forwards.

Daniel Topou returned to his best last season and jagged three tries in his two games vs Manly.

Boyd Cordner has three tries in his last three matches vs Manly, so look for Angus Chrichton to continue this form in the skippers' absence.

SGM; Daniel Topou, Angus Chrichton, Issac Liu.

Cowboys @ Panthers

Saturday 13th March

Game Breakdown

I'm predicting a slight regression for the Panthers this season, with Trent Barrett moving on from being the Panthers offensive guru.

The Panthers left edge was firing once again in the trials and looked to be a destructive unit. This side will be back in the try-scoring highlights early and often this season.

The Panthers centres are always a force to be reckoned with as it's a vital area that carries attacking depth. Both Stephen Chrichton and Brett Naden have scored in their last two matches vs the Cowboys. With Naden out, Paul Momirovski should be able to keep the centre attack going.

Kyle Feldt has scored three tries in his last three games vs the Panthers and is a decent shout to go close again.

SGM; Kyle Feldt, Brian To’o, Stephen Chrichton

Tigers @ Raiders

Sunday 14th March

Game Breakdown

The Tigers show all the promise of returning to competitiveness this season.

The Raiders have had the edge over the Tigers in recent history, holding the Tigers to 12 points or less in each match in the last three years.

Both of these teams generally score low in week one and take a couple of weeks to get up to match speed.

When the Tigers do attack, they prefer to strike down the right-hand side of the field.

The Raiders prefer to attack down the left side of the field, although they are looking at running a young set of backs to start the season.

Best Bet; Total points Under 43.5

Sharks @ Dragons

Sunday 14th March

Game Breakdown

The Dragons scored almost two-thirds of their tries down the right edge last season, and this matches up with a weak Sharks left edge.

The Sharks scored half of their tries by attacking down the right edge last season, and this matches up with how they've attacked the Dragons over the last couple of years. In the previous four matches vs the Dragons, the Sharks right wing and right centre have scored half of the Sharks tries in this matchup.

Last season Sione Katoa jagged tries in both games against the Dragons.

Mikaele Ravalawa scored three tries in the two matches last season.

With Euan Aitken out of the picture, expect the Dragons right-wing to have a great season.

Best Bet; Total points Under 42.5
