Panthers @ Broncos

Thursday 15th April 2021

Game Breakdown

Wow, the Panthers look the part this season. Their attack is brilliant, especially on the left-hand side. The Panthers defence is easily the best in the league, and it’s going to be a great contest this season to see if they can concede fewer points than the Bulldogs score.

The changes have come this week for the Broncos and about time as well. Anthony Milford and Tesi Niu have been dropped in favour of players who will most likely be dropped themselves in the coming weeks. The problem for the Broncos is their defence, especially up the middle. Payne Hass’s return will ever so slightly help this, but at the end of the day, the Broncos have hit an iceberg, and there are not enough lifeboats for everyone.

This week’s line will be exciting at -26, as this is the exact number I have in my power ratings. It’s hard to bet against the Panthers, as they don’t have a habit of running up the score too much. I expect them to come out on the wrong end of a few of these large lines this season.

Charlie Staines has been in great form the past two weeks and has steadily increased his involvement each week. Staines has three tries this season and has gone close a few times as well. The Broncos have allowed a few tries to the right-wing position already this season and could leak another one tonight.

The Broncos weakest aspect this season has been their middle defence. The Brisbane outfit has been leaking tries to halves, props, and fullbacks like collecting water in a collider. Jarome Luai has a try already this season and looks hugely threatening every time he is close to the line. Luai has gone close a few times this season as well, and I rate him as one of the most dangerous five-eighths with the ball in his hands close to the line.

NRL SGM; Charlie Staines Try, Jarome Luai Try. $4.74

Sharks @ Knights

Friday 16th April 2021

Game Breakdown

The Sharks looked like they could be primed for a good season this year under John Morris. Well, I guess that’s not to be the case, and it’s going to go from bad to worse for the next year or two as the reset button is expected to be pressed. On paper, the Sharks are much better than the Knights, but the behind the scenes issues makes it hard to be confident in them.

The Knights showed last week just where their season is heading, and it doesn’t bode well for the red and blue. They were utterly played off the park by the Titans a week after being beaten by the Dragons. This match may be one of the most important games this season for the Knights as their season begins to wobble.

I still like the Sharks to get up in this one as in most sports; a team will always lift for week 1 with their caretaker manager. My power rating for this game has the Sharks as sizeable favourites. However, I will be ignoring that this week as I wait to see how this week plays out.

The Knights have struggled to contain edge forwards this season, especially on the left-hand side. Teig Wilton should line up in that spot this week and is a player that has an exciting future ahead of him. Wilton has already crossed the chalk in limited action this season.

Hymel Hunt started this season off in terrific form, then has become non-existent over the past few weeks. We can put this down to one thing, and that’s the absence of star centre Bradman Best. Best’s vision and work rate is brilliant and raises the profile of those around him. With Best back in the line-up this week, I expect Hunt to return to his early try-scoring prowess.

NRL SGM; Sharks Win, Hymel Hunt Try. $4.99

Roosters @ Storm

Friday 16th April 2021

Game Breakdown

Friday night gives us the game of the round this week. The Storm has looked better and better each week and is beginning to return to a full-strength roster. On the other hand, the Roosters looked brilliant at the start of the season and have come down to earth a bit over the last few weeks. In contrast to the Storm, the Roosters are dropping players like flies as the injury bug bites hard.

This will be another big test for the Storm, who have played some of the best teams in the league to begin the season. The Storm is also coming off back to back big wins against two wooden spoon contenders so that the confidence will be high.

Josh Addo-Carr is a player that has disappointed to begin the season, well in terms of the doubles he is known for. The Fox, however, has still scored and has been involved when his team needs him the most. Addo-Carr has scored in 4 of the seven regular-season games he has started vs the Roosters.

This game is traditionally a very close game, with 4 of the last five regular-season games separated by 2 points or less. With how these two have played their footy to begin the season, I can see this game going close again. Either team to win by 6 points or fewer looks to be an excellent value play in this one.

SGM; Josh Addo-Carr Try, Either team to win by 6.5 points or less. $6.63

Titans @ Sea Eagles

Saturday 17th April

Game Breakdown

Something had to break for the Sea Eagles last week, and they managed to get their first win in a match that was very hard to watch. Manly will be looking to back that win up at their first match in Mudgee. Tom Trobevic is back, which should also raise the appeal of his brother in the try-scoring ranks.

The Titans showed all the potential we were promised in the preseason in their big win last week. We have seen two very different Titans teams this season, and it looks to depend on the opposition they come up against. When facing teams with a decent defence, the Titans capitulate and struggle to move the ball. However, when facing weaker defensive teams, the Titans come alive. This week they will play the latter.

Tom Trbojevic will play his first match this season and loves to score against the Titans. Tommy Turbo has three tries in 3 games against the Titans when playing at fullback. However, It’s Tom’s brother Jake that attracts the value this week. The Trbojevic brothers link up to form a great partnership when on the side together. Jake has scored three tries in 6 games against the Titans while playing lock. The Titans have also conceded the most tries this season to the safety forward position.

When it comes to defending the fullback position, only the Broncos have surrendered more tries than the Sea Eagles. AJ Brimson has had a mixed bag to begin the season, but a healthy match-up today should get his season back on track. Brimson also controls a brilliant record against the Sea Eagles, scoring five tries in 4 games against them.

Best Bet; AJ Brimson Try, Jake Trbojevic Try. $11.63

West Tigers @ Rabbitohs

Saturday 17th April

Game Breakdown

The Rabbitohs are beginning to hit their strides this season, and they get another match against flailing opposition. The Bunnies defence has been strong this season and will be going from strength to strength as the new players begin to gel more. The Rabbitohs weakness still lies in the middle of the park, and it seems this season it will be an issue that will be managed but not fixed.

The Tigers season got put on life support last week following their embarrassing loss to the Cowboys. The Tigers were played off the park by a team that had barely scored in previous weeks. The changes have begun to come for the Tigers, but heads will start to roll if they don’t get an optimal result this week.

One of the better new faces in the Tigers backline has been Daine Laurie. Laurie is showing great potential at the back and looks set to be the future of the attack. Laurie has scored in back to back weeks and gets an intense match-up this week. The bunnies have already leaked four tries to fullbacks this season as they continue to struggle against speed up the middle.

There have been many areas where the Tigers have struggled defensively this season. However, one of their most significant has been their left edge defence. The Tigers have already conceded five tries to right-wingers this season, and this looks set to continue. Josh Mansour has scored in 2 of his last three games for the Bunnies and is increasing his workload each week. Since being dropped in week 2, Mansour has begun to look like the player we are used to from Penrith.

The Rabbitohs are the much stronger team this week, and it will take a minor miracle for the Tigers to have any chance at this one. The Bunnies should win comfortably, and I can see them getting ahead early on.

SGM; Daine Laurie Try, Josh Mansour Try, Rabbitohs to win both halves. $7.46

Eels @ Raiders

Saturday 17th April

Game Breakdown

These 2 top 4 hopefuls were both beaten last time out. The Eels had an embarrassing defeat to the Dragons, while the Raiders suffered a predictable loss to the Panthers. With the hunger growing to get back to winning ways, this looks to be a great football game.

Maika Sivo has been up and down this season and has been the ultimate rocks or diamonds player. Sivo has an excellent opportunity to get the diamonds flowing again with a modest match-up advantage. With the absence of Dylan Brown, Sivo should see more ball as Mitchell Moses takes control of the bulk of the playmaking. This should benefit Sivo and get him to the promised land.

Traditionally this match has gone the way of the Raiders. The Eels haven’t beaten the Raiders in Canberra since 2006. With this record on the line, the Raiders will get themselves up for a big game.

This match has generally been a low scoring affair. As well as this, both of these teams have been built with a defence first structure. We should see plenty of play down the middle through the big guys today.

Best Bet; Maika Sivo Try, Raiders Win, Under 44.5. $7.25
